The Workshop: My place to begin

I have to admit that I never saw myself creating a blog until recently. Then, I realized that I could use it as a source of accountability for my artistic progress by simply journalling about what I am doing to progress as a visual artist. So, here I am, writing the first intimidating (to me) words to my little blog. Now, what next?

So on my horizon is this idea that I want to be a professional artist. I also want to be self-employed and imagine myself as a beginning entrepreneur. Right now, I’m confused about the best place to focus my energies to progress and frankly, this has had me held up for years. So what to do?

An idea that I came up with was to write a business plan, with the goal that this would help me know where to focus. I started taking a class on how to write a one-page business plan– which seems like it’s over my head sometimes– but the people there are supportive and I know that they will help me figure things out.

So today I need to do two things: I need to get a copy of The E-Myth Revisited by someone named Gerber (because that was recommended by my teacher). I can do that. I also need to start writing the plan somehow. There are two business plans that I am interested in creating. One for myself as a fine artist and one for myself as someone who gives art lessons to kids. There is so much in my brain that I want to do but I’ll stop there for now. So, first I think that I should tackle my plan as a fine artist and see how far I can get. I’ll need to look through the E-Myth book to decide a realistic time frame for completing it. (That’s it for now! I’ve got work to do!)

About Rachel Heu

"Creativity is an act of defiance. You're challenging the status quo. You're questioning accepted truths and principles. You're asking three universal questions that mock conventional wisdom: Why do I have to obey the rules? Why can't I be different? Why can't I do it my way?" --Twyla Tharp, The Creative Habit: Learn It and Use It For Life (pg. 133)
